Reflection of Culture.
This collection was made for the Liberty University Fashion Show. The first design in this Collection is the “Reflection of Greek Culture”.
As a student in America, especially going to a religious school that I have heavy personal trauma with, it’s been a wild ride just trying to get my degree. When I was told I should design for the fashion show, I was already stressed and didn’t want to add more, but the idea did appeal to me. So, for my Senior year, I applied and got in to design.
At first, when I was told about the theme for this Fashion show, I was very lost.
The theme was a Biblical one, but the meaning was “a moment of reflection”. I originally wanted to do a Reflection of History as I do specialize in historical fashion, but someone else already had that idea and I didn’t want to step on her toes (she’s really sweet).
So, I started brainstorming when an idea hit me.
What was something that inspired me to start designing (long story)?
Not just History, but World history.
I’ve always been a mythos fan, especially the Greek, Norse, and Egyptian mythos. Their Gods always spoke to me in a way no one at the religious institution could understand, so, I began to think. What if I took something significant from each Culture’s mythos and incorporated it into my collection?
So, I took the Greek Goddess, Hera, as inspiration for this first design.
Throughout Greek History, Hera was seen as the Goddess of marriage and childbirth, as well as Queen of the Gods and wife to Zeus. She was often depicted with rather modest clothing and hair pinned upright to symbolize her moving from a woman to a wife.
Now, her marriage to Zeus was problematic to say the least, but I wanted to honor her image with a gown that I felt would depict her regal authority while still staying true to her character.
Thus the white and gold gown was designed.
