The Underworld Pants

Pants Details

These pants have three separate parts, as you can see. The first part (top right leg) is the Underworld, the domain of Hades, the God of the Dead in Greek Mythology.

The second part (middle right leg) was originally supposed to be a staircase leading down to the third part; however, limited by my own artistic ability, I created instead a cavern of space. Which imprisons the third part.

The third part (bottom right leg) is Tartarus, housing the Titan Kronos. In Greek Mythology, the Titan Kronos once ruled the Earth. However, his three eldest sons, Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon, overthrew him and split him into pieces, condemning him to the pits of Tartarus (a primordial deity which posed as the most secure and mysterious dark abyss) to house the mad Titan.

These pants were an absolute blast to make. They took about a week, and while I didn’t sew the pants myself, the depiction of the Underworld from Greek Mythology was hand-painted with leather paint.

I wanted to decorate some pants, and had planned to do something with these pants when disaster struck…

While I was painting at work, I happened to spill a gallon of oil-based paint (for the first time in my two years of working there at the time) ALL over these pants.

I.

Was.

DEVESTATED.

However, my boss (bless you) threw them in the wash, unfortunately, the paint was still in them and it was a nasty brown. Luckily I had already planned to paint them, this incident just solidified my plan.

Originally, I wanted to paint the Underworld on one pant leg and Olympus on the other, but my dad had a better idea. He suggested I get a second pair of the exact same pair of pants and paint Olympus on the opposite leg there. Unfortunately, when I went back to the store to get another pair, there were no more, so this piece is completely original.

Eventually, I’d like to go back and paint Olympus on a pair of pants, but I’m unsure if I could recreate the same beauty of the Underworld twice.
